Since 1909 the folks who serve through InterServ have been meeting needs, responding to crisis and helping the community define and solve problems.

The upcoming NFL Super Bowl is a big event for sports fans, but InterServ and St. Joseph churches have an even bigger event planned! Churches throughout St. Joseph are planning food drives to support InterServ’s Calvin Center Food Pantry. This fundraising event helps provide low income and financially strapped individuals and families with food to help them stretch their precious food dollars. InterServ’s Food Pantry has seen a drastic increase in the number of clients needing emergency assistance during the past twelve months. In 2010, InterServ distributed over 6,000 food orders, thanks to the generosity of the faith communities.

Last year area churches and individuals collected more than 45,000 cans of soup and other food items as well as nearly $1,500 that was used to purchase food from the local food bank. We have come a long way since our first SOUPer Bowl in 1993 that collected 1,301 cans of soup.

You can help by teaming up with family, friends and co-workers and collecting money for the food pantry or needed items such as dry cereal, oatmeal packets, dry beans, spaghetti and sauce, tuna, and canned dinners like chili and beef stew. Then, on Super Bowl Sunday, gather those donations to help feed the hungry. Donations can be brought to participating churches on Sunday, February 7th or delivered to InterServ's  Calvin Center, 1412 N. 3rd Street, during normal business hours throughout the month of February. Check to see what Souper Bowl activities your church has planned!

If you plan to participate and would like a list of food items needed or participating churches, please call Laurie Spalding at 816-238-4511 Ext 41
